> ABOUT

Idea, material, process and aesthetic become interwoven through experimentation, the importance of each constantly shifting.

I am an artist and printmaker based in West Yorkshire, UK. I have a playful, experimental approach to making work, producing one-off pieces and small, varied editions which combine drawing, printmaking and collage.

My art practice is rooted in a sensory fascination with my surroundings, and work is often the result of an unspoken dialogue with a particular place or a moment of time, real or imaginary. It is the places on the peripheries which interest me most; the remnants of places, forgotten and overlooked. Places at the intersection where two things meet, the in-between places;

where land meets sea
where natural meets man-made
where one shadow intersects another
where rough meets smooth
where memory meets the present moment
where the sublime meets the everyday
where the transient meets the permanent.

I am interested in the tension these opposing forces create, and my work aims to address the push and pull of these disparate elements, exploring dissonance, harmony and balance.

Drawing, photography and film are integral to my working process. I am drawn to their immediacy and use them as preliminary research tools, as a way of making a sensory connection to my subject matter. Printmaking and collage are mediums which help to form, distill and abstract, while keeping the physical act of making at the core of my practice. Idea, material, process and aesthetic become interwoven through experimentation, the importance of each constantly shifting.

It is the physicality of printmaking which resonates with me. Process echoes idea, and moments are captured and physically set into the surface of metal, wood or stone, through a conscious manipulation of the material – carving, scratching, sanding, layering - removing the image further from it's origin so that it becomes something new and other, allowing the viewer to interact with the work from their own position. In current work I am particularly interested in developing prints using hybrid techniques to express this idea of duality.

I grew up in south-west England before moving to Kingston-upon-Thames to study Fine Art, where I discovered my love for printmaking. After graduating in 2005, I went on to undertake a year’s artist residency at Intaglio Printmaker, London, followed by a Post-Graduate Internship at Leicester Print Workshop in 2013, and an artist Residency at Mi-LAB, Japan in 2018. Now based in sunny Yorkshire, I work from my studio as well as teaching printmaking and working as Print Studio Co-ordinator at West Yorkshire Print Workshop.
